Today is “Restore Habeas Corpus Day.” Human rights lawyers are visiting Capitol Hill to demand legislation that fully restores the habeas corpus rights gutted in the Military Commissions Act passed last fall. Please act now. Please take a few minutes to call or email your congressional representatives and urge them to support the Habeas Corpus Restoration Act (H.R. 1416) or similar language in other bills.
The Center for Constitutional Rights has put together an absolutely fantastic web-page that lays out the horrific consequences of the Military Commissions Act, explains why habeas corpus must be restored, and tells you what action you can take right now. Here is the web-page:

The situation at Guantanamo Bay is rapidly deteriorating. Amnesty International reports that the treatment of prisoners is getting worse. The administration has proposed new rules that would sharply limit the detainees' access to lawyers. The Supreme Court is refusing to hear appeals from Guantanamo Bay inmates that challenge the constitutionality of the Military Commissions Act. As we know, some of the detainees being hauled before the commissions have been brutally tortured. It’s up to Congress to stop this horror. Please contact your Congressional representatives now.
